Captured on Camera: EuroTrip Day 1 – Rome

I had never been to Europe before I took this trip. Yet, I had been travelling the world since I was a mere babe and it took 25 years to eventually get to Europe. I made a promise to myself last year when I turned 25 on October 25th; I told myself that this would be a year that I would never forget.

Even though I had never been, I knew that as soon as I arrived in Europe that I would fall in love. I would fall in love with the people, the culture, and the history. I mean sure, Canada has people, culture, and history too, but nothing like what I experienced in Europe. And no; I am not being biased because I am of European heritage…I promise!

I took an overnight flight from Toronto to arrive in Rome mid-Friday morning. A weekend in Rome? Yes please!!

Side note: Pearson Airport has undergone a lot of changes since I was there last year.  I was a very happy girl relaxing in that tech-savvy world of ready-to-use iPad stations and there was even a Best Buy vending machine too!

Anyways fast-forward through a nine hour flight (ha! I wish) and I was glad to have a few days to myself before I started my tour with Contiki (more about this later). It would give me a chance to enjoy the city at my own pace and on my own time.

I had a driver pick me up from the airport (yes he was actually holding a sign with my name on it!) *insert movie-star-moment feeling here*. And for a moment I actually thought this was the car he was leading me to…

Fiat, Fiat car,

Cute…but would it fit all my luggage? Luckily it was the van behind this car that would be bringing me into Roma.

Off to Roma we go!

Some of the first things that I saw when arrived in Rome. The Vespa seemed a bit cliche no? But I’m glad I saw it.

You may think this is silly, but I had a mental checklist of all the things I wanted to do or accomplish while I was in Europe. Have a gelato in Rome? Check!

The first thing I ate in Roma…naturally.

Look at all of those fresh flavours. Wait. Is that a carrot?

Nella Bella hooked me up with this amazing LONDON bag. It was seriously the best travel companion!

The days leading up to my trip I was getting extremely nervous. Maybe I was a little more excited than nervous, but I was still nervous. I was going to be by myself in a new place where I knew nobody. The great thing about spending time by yourself in a new place where you know absolutely nobody, is that you learn a lot about yourself, very quickly. For example, I got lost trying to find the Colosseum and I just went with the flow.

To get around that day I used a map from time-to-time but eventually I got myself to wherever I needed (or wanted) to go. Let’s just say that reading a map is not my forte. However, noting landmarks and using them as a way to get myself around, that’s something I can do with ease.  checkmark_colosseum

I thought I was going to cry when I first saw the Colosseum. It was so beautiful and so strange to think that it is almost 2,000 years old!

There she is in all her glory! And there’s the Colosseum too!

When I first saw these two, my mouth probably dropped to the ground. But eventually I figured it out…sneaky, sneaky. IMG_1700

And with that, day one of my Europe adventure came to an end. I was so exhausted but so happy.

Curls on Camera – Twists

I attended a great event this past Saturday night called Curls, Coils and Cocktails. I always get so jealous when I see events being held all over the world for my fellow naturalistas, and yet in Toronto, there is hardly anything for us girls with curls!

The curls had to be worn out for this event, naturally .

In any case, I had a lot of fun and even met a possible new hairstylist – because…I actually don’t remember the last time I got a haircut. Maybe it was November?..I can’t remember.

I also won a prize! Two pairs of earrings designed by Toni Daley.
I can’t wait to wear them!

Captured On Camera – Sully Wong x ONEXONE HOPE Sneaker

It’s always a good day when I am introduced to designers who partner with charities for a good cause!

Last week I was invited to preview the Sully Wong x ONEXONE HOPE Sneaker, which aims to raise money for the ONEXONE Paediatric Wing in Hospital Mirebalis in Haiti.

After being introduced to the designers and hearing about the great partnership that this collaboration was promoting, I had to check out the sneaker for myself.

The shoe which retails for $150 (plus HST), was made for ladies and gents (that’s right it’s unisex!), and is a limited edition creation (only 360 pairs were created). Which means: when they are gone, they are gone.

It also features the signature colours of the ONEXONE organization and the best part is, 50% of the proceeds from every sale will go to the cause. Talk about making philanthropy fashionable!

Captured On Camera – Élana Camille Gets Fit.

Today I did a couple of things that are not part of the norm for me. I went to the gym & I ate a vegan meal.

I decided that NOW is as good a time as any to start living a healthy lifestyle. Because…if I’m to be completely honest….that doesn’t happen right now in my life. At all.

Where should we start? With the fact that I don’t eat breakfast (I never make the time, even though I could), I love chocolate and sweets (the word moderation means nothing to me), and I would rather walk a mall shopping than walk a 5k (but I still somehow get a little workout from shopping – don’t we all?).

But I’m going to try as of today. That’s a good start right?

lululemon, gym, gym workout, workout, reebok, reeboks, female workout, exercise, get fit, get healthy, be healthy, be fit, lose weight, weight loss Proof that I was in the gym!

The second little piece of new-ness came about after I left the gym. I decided that I would continue being good to my body, and came across a vegan market/restaurant in Liberty Village called Live Market. It was my first time inside the store and it smelled really good. I should have asked what they were making when I walked in….

If you’ve never tried a vegan meal before, don’t be intimidated. A lot of the ingredients are things you probably already eat (hopefully).

I wanted something a little hearty as I had just finished at the gym and so I opted for the “Trainers Bowl” which was a delicious combination of: “Tofu, Tempeh, Collards, Kale, Chickpeas, Sweet Potatoes, Hemp Cabbage Slaw, Burdock, Mixed Seeds, Rice and Tahini Sauce.”

It was SO GOOD. I didn’t know what to expect to be honest, but I devoured that meal. And I poured that Tahini Sauce over everything, but it was the sweet potatoes that really captured my fancy. Delish!

Well, to end today’s successful start in healthy living, I got my brother to pick up some ingredients for me at the grocery store so that I can start making smoothies in the morning!

Last thing that I’ll leave you with is my first memory of a workout routine, courtesy of my mother by way of Jane Fonda.

I always remembered how she had the tapes and would workout to Jane Fonda’s routines.

Check it out (you don’t have to watch the whole thing obviously…):
